Bosue.id - Disappointing news has arrived for Indonesian football fans. The hope of seeing the Garuda Squad compete in Asia's biggest multi-sport event has been completely dashed.

The Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI) has officially confirmed that the Indonesian National Team will not participate in the football event at the 2026 Asian Games, which will be held in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.

This certainty is a major blow, marking the first time the Red and White squad will be absent from the quadrennial championship, after consistently sending its representatives without fail since the 2014 edition in Incheon, South Korea.

Reasons for the Indonesian National Team's Absence at the 2026 Asian Games

The confirmation of the Garuda Squad's absence was directly conveyed by the Chairman of PSSI, Erick Thohir, during a press conference at the Ministry of Youth and Sports (Kemenpora) office in Jakarta on Tuesday, June 23, 2026.

In his statement, Erick Thohir emphasized that the decision is final and cannot be contested.

According to him, the new rules set by the tournament organizers and Asian football authorities are final and will not undergo any changes.

"No. Because from the Asian Games (OCA) and AFC rules, there has already been such a decision. Because of the rules," Erick stated firmly when asked for confirmation regarding the team's chances of participating.

The new rules that are hindering the Red and White squad's progress are the result of a joint agreement and regulation update between the local organizing committee (AINAGOC), the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC).

In the latest agreed-upon regulations, the format and quota of participants for the men's football event have been strictly cut and limited to only 16 countries.

To determine these 16 countries, the organizers implemented very stringent qualification criteria.

The teams eligible to participate and compete for medals in Aichi-Nagoya will absolutely only be those countries that successfully qualify and secure a ticket to the final round of the 2026 U-23 Asian Cup.

Unfortunately, the Indonesian U-23 National Team's campaign in the qualification round had to end early, and they failed to meet this main requirement.

The Young Garuda squad only managed to finish as runner-up in their qualification group, a position that ultimately was not enough to secure them a spot in the final round of the 2026 U-23 Asian Cup, which is the gateway to the Asian Games.

This situation means Indonesia will have to be content as spectators from the sidelines at the upcoming grand event.

For additional information, the competition from Southeast Asia (ASEAN) is also quite fierce.

Based on the qualification results so far, only two countries from the ASEAN region have confirmed their spot in the final round of the 2026 U-23 Asian Cup and are automatically eligible to represent Southeast Asia at the 2026 Asian Games, namely regional football giants Thailand and Vietnam.

Previously Sparked Controversy and KOI's Push

Before the official confirmation and final statement from PSSI, the new regulations implemented by OCA and AFC had actually sparked a heated controversy among national sports stakeholders.

The Chairman of the Indonesian Olympic Committee (KOI), Raja Sapta Oktohari, had previously sharply criticized the new regulations.

KOI even issued a call and urged PSSI officials to act quickly, speak louder on the international stage, and fight for the fate of the Indonesian National Team to avoid being excluded from the Asian Games.

KOI assessed that the absence of football, the most popular sport in the country, would reduce the appeal and spirit of the Indonesian contingent. However, in the end, the international regulations still stood firm and had to be obeyed.
